Mittagong cenotaph awaiting the 2017 Anzac Day Dawn Service

As they do every year, Highlanders rose from their beds to gather at the cenotaph in Mittagong before dawn on 25 April 2017.

From small children in their pyjamas to proud men and women wearing their medals, Highlanders bowed their heads and stood in silence on this most special day of the year in our country.

The traditional Dawn Services begin a series of marches and gatherings across the Highlands to commemorate the men and women who have served Australia in the defence forces, from the Boer War to today.

A cross of poppies recalls the battles of Flanders’ fields

Mittagong’s beautiful Poppies Cross is featured on Anzac Day in the grounds of St Stephen’s Anglican Church. The cross is covered with hand-knitted life-size red poppies ‒ the Flanders’ poppies ‒ that have become the symbol of peace for all military conflicts. The story of Mittagong’s Poppies Cross

The Poppies Cross stands four metres tall, holding 4000 hand-knitted red poppies. Each poppy took 15 to 30 minutes to knit by a group of 20 ladies from St Stephen’s, who gathered for tea and coffee and a chat, with local friends helping them. Tallong Apple Day Sunday 7 May 2017

The Tallong Apple Day takes place on the first Sunday in May and Highland FM will be broadcasting live from the festival  from 9am–2pm.
