This July, Highland FM’s 100% Home-Grown program is proud to spotlight Ella’s Holiday – a band straight from the Southern Highlands whose smooth, genre-blending sound captures the timeless charm of classic jazz while bringing fresh soul, groove, and local flair to every stage they grace.
Who’s Ella?
Don’t let the name fool you, there’s no one named Ella in the band. The name Ella’s Holiday was inspired by a clever blend of jazz royalty: Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, with a cheeky nod to crooner Frank Bennett, himself a tribute to Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. It’s a name that hints at the band’s musical soul: nostalgic, refined and joyfully playful.
Over the years, many have assumed the group’s lead singer is Ella, but the band embraces the confusion with a smile.
Meet The Band
Ella’s Holiday is made up of six seasoned musicians, each bringing their own unique style and experience to the group’s signature sound:
Louise “Lou” Bruce – Lead vocals
With a warm and expressive voice, Lou brings classic jazz, soul and blues to life with elegance and modern flair
Dave Helman – Drums
A seasoned NSW drummer with extensive club and touring experience, Dave keeps the groove steady and spirited
Stewart “Stew” Harrison – Piano & keyboards
A jazz veteran who has performed festivals across Australia, Stew adds harmonic richness and melodic depth
Mike Hammond – Trumpet & saxophone
Educated at Sydney Conservatorium with 40 years experience, Mike weaves jazz textures and soulful solos
Mike Walsh – Double bass
A well-known figure in Sydney jazz venues and festivals (plus international cruise experience), Mike provides warm, driving basslines
