Artist of the Month: Cedar Newman

Our 100% Home-Grown Artist Of The Month is South Coast virtuoso on the violin, Cedar Newman.

Throughout the month, Highland FM 107.1 will set the stage for Cedar’s timeless melodies of the past, featuring the sweet serenade of Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’, the emotional resonance of Bach’s ‘Fugue No.1’ and the technical brilliance of Eugine Ysyae’s Sonatas, all recorded in the Studios of Highland FM.

Cedar Newman, a 19 year old powerhouse from the South Coast of NSW, discovered her passion for the violin from a young age. Cedar’s musical journey has been enriched by a cadre of influential figures who have lit up her path. Sarah Hindson, bestowed upon her the foundational magic of the violin, while Goertz Richter guided her with wisdom and passion. Gian Franco-Ricci unveiled the deep, enchanting secrets of the piano, leading Cedar to a prestigious LmusA in 2020. Bradley Gilchrist fostered a musical friendship that allowed her to explore the world of violin and piano repertoire.

Cedar’s love for performing chamber music on the violin is a defining aspect of her musical identity. Beyond her native Australia, at the age of 13 she embarked on a musical odyssey by studying at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, securing scholarships and accolades along the way.

In New York, Cedar commenced studies with legendary Russian violinist Albert Markov and since 2018 she studied with the brilliant Professor Lucie Robert. Cedar’s performances have graced audiences across North America, Europe and Australia, leaving an indelible mark.

Her connection to the Southern Highlands is a pivotal chapter in her musical story. Notably, she performed Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with the Highland Sinfonia at the tender age of nine, beginning a journey that led to her receiving the Eva Pascoe Inaugural Scholarship. Cedar’s collaborations with the Highland’s Music Collective have left audiences in awe and she’s embraced opportunities with the Southern Highlands Symphony Orchestra and Steel City Strings.

Cedar’s dedication to her craft is evident in her performances and recordings, with radio stations across Australia broadcasting her work. She treasures her great-grandmother’s violin and has Jason Catlett’s unwavering support with a nineteenth-century French bow. Cedar Newman’s musical story is a symphony of passion, dedication and breathtaking performances that continue to captivate audiences worldwide. Get ready to be swept away by her musical magic.
